It is simply towards end up this starts to fall apart, nevertheless the slap-right up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it will have no higher difficulty from inside the lifestyle down their very unattractive label.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Flick Bulletin said “The film motions within an instant rate, the fresh new talk is actually slick and you can characterisations basically energetic. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) has worked on casino and old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely managed body gestures off love and possibility, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive photographs (plus his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet outlined spectacle a hidden antique of one’s category.” [ 10 ]

Picture provides action and you will suspense, and you can particular short suits off jokes to incorporate style. Ace activities because of the Manhood Powell, once the a playing household overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, once the an authorities inspector, also within the rating . While the patch employs a familiar development, the characterizations is actually fresh plus the performances adequate to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you will relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney contact. Strange cam bases arrive on occasion so you can heighten notice and momentarily stop the attention. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing once the director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, fresh publisher and you will representative producer, in addition to supports making this a softer development.” [ 11 ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the great little woman who brings forth the new finest in him and you will Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen whom will get him into the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy since villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a new in a position concert tour as a weary cops inspector exactly who fundamentally shuts the situation. Many sipping and you will smoking is carried out by the the concerned.” [ several ]
